IBM

IBM Italia was established in 1927. With over 5.500 employees operating on the whole national territory and 2015 revenue of 1.869.372.071€, IBM Italia has a recognized role in sustaining economic growth and innovation. The company is working on world-class projects in all sectors, supporting companies and institutions which are transforming their operations and innovating in research and development to shape the future of society at large. In particular, IBM scientists and industry experts have extensive experience in delivering innovative and ground-breaking smart energy projects around the world. For example, IBM has worked with utility companies globally to accelerate the adoption of smart grids to make networks more reliable and give customers better usage information; deployed strategic asset management systems using complex predictive algorithms; implemented transactive energy systems to optimize intermittent energy generation sources; and built an energy clearing house to harness intermittent wind power by turning electric vehicles into a distributed storage system.

IBM Italia is responsible for IBM’s research, development, services, and marketing activities in Italy. In its R&D laboratories, IBM Italia conveys technological and methodological advances achieved in the context of its global research in the form of software components and/or intellectual capital assets available worldwide.

IBM is a global leader in the creation, development and manufacture of the industry’s most advanced information technologies, including computer systems, software, networking systems, storage devices and microelectronics. With eight labs and 3000 researchers worldwide, IBM Research operates in all the spectrum of IT innovation. IBM promotes industry standards at several institutions to facilitate integration and interoperability of Web Information Systems based on enhanced modelling capabilities, open interchange protocols, and standardized data exchanges.

IBM Research-As-A-Service (RAAS) is part of the Corporate R&D network which supersedes the Centre of Advanced Study (CAS), and was created in 1990 to reinforce the relationship between IBM and Universities through joint research projects regarding areas of common interest.

RAAS hosts a number of research and development activities in the context of both self-funded and co-funded research projects, mainly in the area of semantic-based information and services integration, computational linguistics, autonomic computing, Healthcare, Energy, Cloud. RAAS is strictly coupled with the IBM Italia Solution Lab, originally established as a first-of-a kind publishing solution in the IBM Italia Scientific Center, Rome. The RAAS and IBM Italia Solution Lab specific mission is to support IBM Clients in their emerging and increasing needs with innovative solutions that standard products can not satisfy, mainly in the areas of Health, Energy & Utility, Cultural Heritage, Agrifood, Infomobility, Internet of Things, Cognitive, Security, Content management, Digital media, Speech & language technologies.

MAIN TASK ATTRIBUTED IN THE PROJECT

IBM activities in this project will be on WP5 (Enhancing grid efficiency by optimal coordination of advanced transmission grid devices and system services based on large demand-response and RES generation). IBM key activities will focus on the design and the realization of an Energy Management System through the integration of forecasting and optimization modules inside a cloud-based platform able to connect the various field devices and components on one side and the different stakeholders on the other including but not limited to the TSO existing operational systems. Addressing the possible exploitation of projects concepts and technology in large scale development scenario will be also a key target of the project for IBM.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement n°773406
